I bought this as a replacement for a Bose Acoustimass system that was in use for the last 15 years. It was an old school analog system with the huge bass speaker. I was using a signal converter to hook it up to the tv. I love Bose products but I really wanted to move to the next level of sound quality for movies. The Polk S4 has every feature you could want and nothing you don’t. The sound during a movie with Dolby Atmos is shocking. It literally fills the room with sound. The ability to boost voices is a real plus. Overall I don’t think there’s any reason to replace this speaker anytime soon. It really is as great as the reviews all say.
i have a samsung sound bar in my bedroom and although it does it's job well enough, i feel like this one definitely outperforms it in functionality, quality and aesthetic. when/if this one stops working i'm definitely ordering this brand again.
Sound is great especially with the voice adjustment button.
Only thing I don’t like is their remote, but that’s a personal preference
As I live in an apartment, now, my previous 5-channel system was too loud to get clear voices, so I was using the TV speakers to avoid annoying my neighbors.
I decided this is a compromise, and this is capable of way more bass than I need, the voices clear. Perfect solution for quality sound that is easy to control.
Great set up for movies. Sounds really cool during a NASCAR race. I would recommend.
Edit to Add : Tried the Bluetooth function a few days ago by pressing the BT icon on the top of the sound bar, then paired it with my iPhone. I opened the SIRIUS XM app on my phone, tuned into the wifey's favorite Classic Rock station, and cranked it up while she cleaned house before company arrived. The jams filled the family room with Led Zeppelin, and she was rockin' in no time. This was just icing on the proverbial sound bar cake - more than pleased with this purchase.
To optimize the listening experience, the sound-bar should be mounted a few inches below the TV. Wiring can be smoothly routed in a tidy bundle using a cable sleeve. The speakers arrive in unique packaging, like a musical instrument; which I suppose they are.
Love the product and has earned its nearly 5 star rating. That plus the unexpected delivery makes this a no brainer. Great job Amazon!
However you'll enjoy HDR quality sound which fills your room. I found the sweet spot at volume level 60% - its not overwhelming yet voice and background music which enhances your movie viewing experience receives crisp highs and midrange. The bass introduces you to deep tones of foot steps and various action sound effects.
Granted I could have dug deep and purchased a $500+ combo set but why when this $159.00 set is surprisingly a great product.
Again - This not a room shaking product, your adding quality sound to enhance your TV's weak azz speakers.
Enjoy -'While they're still available at a discounted price point.
I bought this to replace the 12 year old $30 soundbar I had outside at my tiki bar that finally gave up the ghost. I have a corrugated tin roof which made it virtually impossible to hear anything when it's raining (a frequent dinner time occurrence here in FL). I was looking for volume because of this. It is louder than the last one, but not quite loud enough to overpower the rain when watching a movie, but when streaming Pandora or IHeart, it has more than enough power. If using in a "normal" ambient noise environment, it will be more than loud enough.
The sub is a nice addition and does add a nice dimension to the sound, but tends to be a bit muddy. I have it in a cabinet under my flat top grill and with the bass turned down it is pretty decent, adding just enough bass without overpowering the sound of the main speaker.
For my application (which admittedly is probably uncommon) it works well enough. I can see this being a decent option for someone on a budget that just wants a little more sound quality than what their tv can provide
Update: I have since moved the sub from the cabinet to a shelf up in the rafters near the main sound bar. Again, it's not optimal, but it's out of the elements, and the bass response is actually quite good up there. I have come upon a small issue, and it's no slight to the speaker as my application is not really what it was designed for, but when the humidity gets high (80% or more), it won't turn on. Once the humidity drops it functions normally.
The sound out of this Polk sound bar was awesome and the remote bass woofer added a total new sensation to watching TV.
Very pleased. Easy Install and works great with the HDMI(arc) input
Polk took 15 min and several failed attempts at set up. It was much more work and steps to get it working. If you buy the Polk you will see what I mean.
2. Polk doesn't have as many functions available on the remote as Vizio does.
Eg. Vizio has separate bass and sub adjustments and a cool indicator light on sound bar Polk does not. That feature is key to dialing in the sound.
3.vizio has a treble adjustment on remote Polk doesn't have a treble adjustment.
4. Vizio talks to you giving instructions resulting in a really fast set up. Just push power button on sub and a couple quick steps and voila its done.
5.vizio looks higher class in my opinion the sub is real slick looking with all rounded molded in back with the sides. It looks higher end than polkas particle board square look like most of the subs iv seen. The Vizio is half the size and sounds twice as big with much lower and powerful bass.
Well there are some facts and opinions.
Hands down in every way I could see and hear the Vizio was the one that I would choose.
I hooked them up in the same room exactly in the same spot and played the same movie Vizio sound much better in every way with killer bass.
And Vizio had a nicer more sleek remote control.
The Vizio also has the woofer pointing towards the ground and also has a port in the back of the sub box so you can put it in the corner and the port will face toward the wall creating a deep bass.
Polk speaker is inside box with just a port facing to the front so if you face the port towards the wall you end up seeing the ugly back of the Polk woofer.
So there you have it lots of facts and opinions.
This unit fills the room and then some. I first tried it hooked up as bluetooth - the sound was good but not as good as if you connect via optical (which is true of any unit). The down side to using optical is that you have to control the audio using the remote and NOT the tv's remote. I have a Harmony ultimate remote so it was no problem to program in the sound bar. Anyway, with a $10 set of brackets I found on Amazon I was able to mount the bar directly to the back of my samsung tv and have it hang down underneath. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the bass especially when you consider that it is a wireless device.
For my specific use case I am thrilled with this device.
1. Setup: Basically plug-n-play in regards to the basic set up. Instructions are very clear regardless of what connection you make between the TV and the bar; I used the optical 'cable', plugged in the bar, plugged in the base, turned on the TV and it worked like a charm. One of the things I liked right way was the bar turned on and off with the TV. There is one little issue with this if you use it with Google Home (or Alexa) for music; it may through the on-off sync between the bar and tv off (when you turn the TV on the bar goes off and vice-versa). To compensate for this I also set up my Dish remote's aux function to operate the bar.
2. Google Home integration: Took about 5 seconds using the Google Home app. Through the app or voice commands (phone, Dish remote, Nest mini, etc.), you can play your favorite music; we use Spotify and it works great.
3. Sound quality: Sound quality is excellent and comparible to old, more expensive Bose sound bar it replaced.
Overall, we are very happy with this bar from all aspects and would highly recommend it.
It synced to the Vizio on fist try. Took a few minutes to figure out the remote. I use it of course for TV, but I use it a lot for playing music.
The sound is better than I imagined. It has more volume than I’ll ever use, and great clarity. It comes with wireless bass which worked perfectly the moment I plugged it in. The only ‘con’ is that there’s not a volume level for the bass. You have to adjust according to your taste. It doesn’t put out ground vibrating bass, but is solid.
I recommend this product. Great value and perfect for what I want.
Many reviewers pointed out the great sound quality but lack of a decent remote. I completely agree but the trick is to set it up to your liking using the remote the first time then put the remote away and just use the TV or streaming box remote to control the volume.
The sound is truly crisp and clear and you can feel the power behind it. The sub is not the deepest (its perfectly fine for a home theater) but if positioned well is a fantastic compliment to the system. It was very easy to setup as it is pre-linked to the soundbar from the factory. Simply plug it in somewhere and they will talk to each other.
You wont regret buying this. Hope this helps.
Update: I realized that the sound bar wasn't perfectly aligned with my TV speakers and there was a significant delay or echo in the sound. My TV is about 6 years old, and that is probably the issue. There is no fix in the audio menu of the TV. The solution I landed on was to use an Aux cable instead of the Optical/HDMI combo. That solved my delay issue and I don't really notice much of a difference in the sound quality. Still very happy with the product.
Maybe it’s just me but I triple checked all the measurements to fit perfectly and this was the only one that fit my needs. I’m amazed with the quality of the sound and bass! I’m using the ARC HDMI audio connection so as soon as I turn my PS4 on, the TV turns on, and so does the sound bar. I use the TV remote to lower the volume so no extra remotes are needed but are provided. The instructions are so clear Ray Charles could’ve wired everything up.
I’ll be updating if anything changes. But I’ve got a good feeling. So if there isn’t an update, I still stand by my first initial review.
This unit is not home theater sound but what a difference from the TV speakers on this Samsung 65" television. The wireless subwoofer synced to the soundbar immediately. There is bass and adjustment on the remote control but not on the subwoofer itself. Thought that might be an issue but once I set the volume to where I wanted it - it was good enough to keep it there no matter how loud or soft I played the soundbar. Setup was a snap - the HDMI ARC synced flawlessly to the TV. I did not hook up the digital audio cable but I could plug it in anytime. The Bluetooth synced great to my phone and iPad and the streaming music sounded crisp and clean. My expectations were exceeded. Again, it's not a home theater system but Polk didn't intend this to be. For the family room television, it is perfect
I have to say this system sounds phenomenal. I was worried because we have an open floorplan and our living room and kitchen make a pretty large space. Approx 30ft x 15ft but boy was I surprised. This system really has some volume. I started by streaming some music from amazon and it sounded great. Nice bass no distortion and the music filled the room with no problems. Sound quality vs price would give this system a 5 out of 5 rating.
Setup was a breeze. You just put 2 screws in the wall (use drywall anchors if you cant hit studs) and it slides right on. Template is included if you need it to layout the holes.
The ARC input allows me to control the volume with my cable remote and it powers on the system seamlessly. 5 out of 5 there as well.
Only negatives I can think of are limited sound customizations there are only 3 preset sound modes and 3 voice levels to choose from. Also the remote is lackluster. For the price these are non issues for me.
I would rwcommend this system to anyone.
